Movement indication solution:

The position of the users hand within the leap motions frame determines the rotation value of the shader, so it appears to be spinning side to side when turning and rolls forwards or backwards depending on whether they are moving forwards or backwards. Thus indicating to the user that their avatar is moving and at what speed even if there are no objects in the near vicinity.
